If this story qualifies as a “top story” for Yahoo News’ frontpage, then they need to slap whoever programmed that computer algorithm that picks those.

“Innate deficit of buoyancy”? Really?
When I lived in Barbados, I was amazed at how few of the denizens knew how to swim or ever even went wading in the sea. According to informants, the sea was crawling with deadly creatures that made it too dangerous to swim. I suppose that they reckoned that all those tourists on the beach disappeared at the end of the week because they had been eaten by sea creatures.
Those who braved the waters swam very well, thank you, and floated plenty well, so I doubt that the bias against swimming was based on anything physiological. Dollars to donuts the attitude goes back to slavery when swimming to escape was discouraged by various means, not that you could swim to escape.
